Pressing pause on Lagom

October 18, 2019

If you’ve read our Editors’ Letter from Lagom #10, you’ll know that we’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently about the idea of ‘balance’ being a moving target; what might feel like a great balance one day might not further down the line; shifting priorities in life change what kind of goals we set for ourselves in the moment.

With all of this in mind, we’ve decided to press pause on the Lagom project.

As you can imagine, this has been an incredibly difficult decision for us to make. Running the magazine has been hugely rewarding and we’ve met so many amazing people doing inspiring things with their lives, but this journey has not been without its considerable challenges, and there are so many behind-the-scenes tasks (and costs!) that have, over time, become just a little too draining. We’ve been stretched beyond our resources, and have strived to continue to the best of our abilities, but enjoying what we do has always been the primary criteria for defining Lagom’s existence. Lately, it’s been harder to achieve that, mainly because the magazine has never really been able to achieve enough commercial success to elevate it from ‘side project’ status. And with issues #1 to #10 having seen so many personal changes in life — not least the births of our two daughters — that sense of our shifting goals and priories has never seemed so resonant.

We’d like to think that this is not quite the end of our journey, and we plan to use this time to take a step back and consider how best to move forward in other creative endeavours. We love working together, so the spirit of Lagom will likely return in some form, even if it’s under a different name or in a different format, so we’re calling this a “pause” rather than a complete end. An ellipsis rather than a full-stop, as it were. But, for the sake of clarity, this means there will be no further issues of the magazine, no new posts on the website, and no more activity on social media.

If you’re a subscriber wondering what this means for your subscription, please rest assured that you will not receive any further charges. For the handful of you on our old (non-recurring) subscription product, we’ll be in touch with you individually to offer you refunds for any future issues you might have already paid for.

If you’d like to continue enjoying Lagom, we’ve now re-priced our back issues to clear out our stock: Lagom #3 is now just £3, Lagom #4 is £4, Lagom #5 is £5, etc. For the foreseeable future, you’ll be able to purchase back issues from our online shop.

So, we hope to see you all again one day, albeit in a different guise. Until then, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for your huge support in this little adventure of ours. Without your support, Lagom simply wouldn’t have been possible, or able to continue as long as it has. We’ll miss you sincerely.
